When it comes to spray mops, there are two products that come to mind: The Bona Spray Mop and the Swiffer WetJet. In this article, I will compare the two products to help you decide which one is better for you.

To keep things simple, I will only compare the two products based on features that are practical, not listing out useless product dimensions. Here is the complete breakdown of the Bona Spray Mop vs. Swiffer WetJet:

1. Bona Spray Mop sprays more evenly than Swiffer WetJet

Since both are categorized as “spray mops'', it’s only right to compare both of their spraying effectiveness. Both products do their job well, but just like everything, each product has its own strengths.

In my review of the Bona Spray Mop, I praised the product for being able to produce an extra fine spray of cleaning solution. A gentle mist, if you will. The Bona’s spray system produces the right amount of cleaning solution that does not overwet floors, which is the very thing you look for in a spray mop.

However, with the Swiffer WetJet, I found the spray stream was narrower than Bona’s. This meant that some areas in front of the mop were fully coated in the cleaning solution, while other spots were still dry.

It’s definitely not something to worry about, because you are going to mop the floors with the pads anyway, but in terms of spray effectiveness, the Bona Spray Mop is definitely better than the Swiffer WetJet.

I like to think the spray effectiveness of the Bona Spray Mop will save me more money in the long run. Not only does it produce a fine mist that doesn’t overwet my floors, but it saves the cost of the cleaners.

Because each spray can cover a huge area of the floor (long and wide distance), I don’t have to use a lot of cleaning solution while using the Bona Spray Mop. One bottle of cleaning liquid will last a long time.

2. Bona is cheaper in the long run (Swiffer requires you to buy extras)

In terms of price, there is not a lot of difference between the two products. Both the Bona Spray Mop and the Swiffer WetJet Starter Kit will cost you between $30 to $40, depending on where you buy them.

Both products will come with everything you need to start cleaning immediately, including the cleaning solution that is needed for the particular mop. Now I know what you’re thinking:

If both product prices are similar, why should you compare the prices? Although the product prices are similar, there are different costs between each product that can potentially save you money in the long run.

First, the Bona replacement pads cost more than the Swiffer mop pads. However, Bona mop pads are washable, which means you don’t have to throw them away after each use and you can use them several times. Swiffer pads, on the other hand, are meant to be disposable.

This means that you can use the Bona mop pads for a very long time. Contrast that with the Swiffer mop pads that are disposable, which you need to dispose of after each use. As a result, you will have to spend more money on replacement pads by using the Swiffer WetJet.

Another price consideration you need to take into account is the cost of batteries. The Swiffer WetJet requires batteries to work, whereas the Bona Spray Mop doesn’t need batteries. The Bona Spray Mop uses air pressure to spray the cleaning solution onto the floor.

So, if the batteries die, you won’t be able to use your Swiffer WetJet until you replace the batteries. In my opinion, this is extra hassle that I don’t need. What I want is a simple spray mop without the fuss.

Although the starting price of the Swiffer WetJet is cheaper by about $10, you will have to spend more money on extras in the long run (which adds up quickly). On the flip side, the Bona Spray Mop may appear more expensive, but will save you a lot of money for the foreseeable future.

3. Bona’s mop head is larger than Swiffer’s

In terms of the mop head size, the Bona Spray Mop wins hands down. Measuring 16.5 inches by 4.5 inches, the Bona’s mop head is super large and is designed to get the job done quickly. On the other hand, the Swiffer WetJet mop head’s width is almost half the size of Bona’s mop head.

That being said, it does not mean that Bona’s bigger mop head is better than Swiffer’s because it’s dependent on your situation. Although the Swiffer WetJet won’t cover as much ground with each wipe, its smaller head allows you to reach smaller spaces and maneuver around furniture more efficiently.

If, however, you are cleaning a nice open room with little clutter and furniture, then due to the size of the Bona mop head's size, it would win hands down. It can move over larger areas of flooring in less time.

So, if you have a bigger space to clean, I would go for the Bona Spray Mop due to its large mop head. You’ll clean more in less time. But if you have a smaller space to work with, the Swiffer WetJet would be ideal.

4. Swiffer works on a variety of surfaces, Bona works only on hardwood

My only gripe with the Bona Spray Mop is that it does not work well on other types of flooring besides hardwood. The Bona mop is recommended for cleaning only hardwood floors, but the Swiffer spray mop was designed to be compatible with a variety of surfaces, like laminate, hardwood, vinyl, and ceramic tile flooring.

And there you have it, the Bona Spray Mop vs. Swiffer WetJet comparison.

Is Bona better than Swiffer? I would think so. For my money, I would choose the Bona Spray Mop over the Swiffer WetJet because it sprays more evenly and is cheaper in the long run.

However, if you have a smaller space to clean, with a variety of surfaces (hardwood, vinyl, ceramic, and tile), I would recommend the Swiffer WetJet due to its smaller size and versatility.
