The Swiffer WetJet is a simple and convenient all-in-one mopping system. It is equipped with a solution bottle which allows you to spray cleaning solution by pressing a handle as you mop.

Unfortunately, many owners complain that their device is leaking and dripping. There are many reasons why a Swiffer WetJet is leaking. The following are the problems and their solutions:

  1. The clear rubber seal is damaged. Remove the solution bottle and hold it upside down (with the cap pointing towards the ground). If the bottle drips, the clear rubber seal is damaged, and the refill tank will need to be replaced.
  2. The solution bottle has not clicked into place. Make sure the solution bottle has fully clicked into the Swiffer WetJet.
  3. The solution bottle is not positioned correctly. Make sure the narrow side of the solution bottle is against the pole. You want the “Swiffer WetJet” text to be visible.
  4. You opened the solution bottle. The solution bottle is not meant to be opened or refilled. If the solution bottle is empty, please buy additional bottles that are sold separately.

However, you need to keep in mind that the leaking can be caused by a combination of the above. In this post, we share with you why a Swiffer WetJet is leaking and how to troubleshoot the issue.

How to Fix Swiffer WetJet Leaking

Below, we share with you 4 potential causes of a leaking or dripping Swiffer WetJet. As long as you follow the simple troubleshooting steps listed below, your Swiffer WetJet will not leak anymore.

1. Check the solution bottle’s rubber seal for damage

Nine times out of ten, a Swiffer WetJet is leaking because the solution bottle’s cap/rubber seal is damaged.

To confirm, remove the bottle from the device and hold it upside down (with the cap pointing towards the ground). If the bottle drips, the clear rubber seal is damaged, and the refill will need to be replaced.

You can buy Swiffer WetJet bottle refills.

2. Install the solution bottle correctly

A Swiffer WetJet can leak and drip cleaning solution all over the place if you fail to install the cleaning solution bottle correctly. To install the Swiffer WetJet cleaning solution bottle, align the arrow on the bottle with the pole and gently push it down until it clicks into place.

If you do not hear the bottle click into place, then it has not been installed correctly.

If your Swiffer WetJet is brand new, there are a few steps you need to take before installing the solution bottle.

First, align the notches and slide the poles together to secure the two pieces into place. Next, slide open the battery compartment and insert 4 AA batteries. Slide the battery compartment back into the Swiffer WetJet.

Last but not least, remove the cardboard insert before installing the cleaning solution bottle.

3. The solution bottle positioning is wrong

Even if you hear the bottle click into place, there is a chance that the solution bottle is not positioned correctly. Make sure the narrow side of the solution bottle is against the pole.

You need to align the arrow on the bottle with the pole, then gently push it down until it clicks into place. The bottle positioning is correct if you can see the “Swiffer WetJet” text when the device is upright.

4. It’s best not to refill the Swiffer WetJet solution bottle!

Making your own Swiffer WetJet refill is one of the most popular life hacks around.

Because Swiffer makes it ALMOST impossible to open the bottle cap, the hack involves opening the bottle cap by dipping it inside boiling water for 90 seconds. By then, you are able to open the bottle cap and refill it. If you do this several times, the plastic lid can be twisted off without any heating.

Unfortunately, opening the solution bottle cap is not recommended by Swiffer.

Of course, as a business, the Swiffer company wants to make a profit by selling a countless amount of refill bottles but the bottles are also designed to be tightly sealed and not opened.

If you have ever opened the Swiffer WetJet solution bottle, there is a chance that you have damaged the cap, causing it to leak and drip cleaning solution all over the place.

If this is the case, replace the damaged bottle with a new one. You can buy several different kinds of cleaning solution bottles, including the multi-purpose solution, vinyl tile and laminate, and wood floor cleaner.
