A Bona Premium Spray Mop is one of the best mops around because it sprays a fine mist of cleaning solution onto its path. But sometimes it won’t spray. So, why is your Bona Premium Spray Mop not spraying?

A Bona Premium Spray Mop will not spray if the refillable cleaning liquid cartridge is not firmly seated into the mop head. Also, if the spray mop is a couple of years old, gunk may have accumulated in the spray valve cylinder. You’ll need to disassemble it, remove the gunk, and lubricate it.

In this article, you will learn how to assemble the Bona Premium Spray Mop to ensure that it sprays fine mist solution properly. You will also learn how to remove the gunk from the spray valve cylinder and lubricate it.

How to fix Bona Premium Spray Mop not spraying

There are 2 reasons why a Bona Premium Spray Mop won’t spray. It won’t spray if the cleaning liquid container is not installed properly or the spray valve cylinder has accumulated too much gunk over time.

1. Make sure the cleaning liquid cartridge is installed properly

The first thing you want to do is to make sure your Bona spray mop is installed properly. The Bona Premium Spray Mop won’t disperse the fine mist if the liquid cartridge is not sitting properly on the holder.

According to the Bona Customer Service, the inconsistent squirting problem is often caused by the refillable cartridge container not being firmly seated into the mop head. Make sure to push the cartridge all the way in.

There should be no visible gaps along the edge where the container and the mop body meet. Once the container has been installed, you should notice air bubbles coming up through the cleaning liquid inside the container. That is a telltale sign that the cartridge is seated properly.

Every time I see the bubbles coming up through the liquid inside the container, my Bona Premium Spray Mop keeps spraying consistently. As long as you insert the cartridge into the holder correctly (until you hear a click), you won’t experience any inconsistent squirting problem.

2. Remove gunk from spray valve cylinder and lubricate

If your Bona spray mop is a couple years old, it could be that the spray valve cylinder has accumulated gunk and lint balls over time. You need to remove them and lubricate the rusty parts.

Make sure you have two sets of screwdrivers ready (one flathead and one Phillips). You would also need a lubricant. I recommend a dry lubricant (like this one) because it doesn’t leave an oily mess.

B'laster 16-TDL Advanced Dry Lube...
  • Provides superior, long-lasting lubrication for every household lubricant need
  • Use on locks and catches, hinges, cables, window tracks and glass, rope, door tracks and conveyor belts
  • It's also safe for use on plastics

The first thing you want to do is to remove the liquid cartridge from the mop head. Apply some Vaseline around the O-Ring (the tip of the cartridge) so it slides in and out easily and does not dry out.

Separate the top part of the handle from the bottom part of the handle. You can do this by using a flathead screwdriver to pry both handles apart. Both parts of the handle will come right off.

You can spray some lubricant down the opening of the bottom part of the handle. This will actuate the plunger. You can also push a pencil down the opening to actuate the plunger.

Next, lay the Bona spray mop on a flat surface and use a Phillips screwdriver to open the 3 screws securing the cover. With the screws removed, you can remove the mop base and slide the bottom handle from the unit.

On the bottom side there is a tiny rectangular tab that fits flush into the bottom. Push the tab in with a small flathead screwdriver and the bottom part of the handle will separate from the spray valve cylinder.

Inside the valve, there is a spring that squirts cleaning solution on the floor. Over time, it will accumulate gunk and small lint balls inside. It will also get rusty over time, so lubricate it thoroughly. You can also use a pencil or a screwdriver to actuate the plunger by pushing it down.

Eventually, you should be able to get the entire thing to work like new. The spring will trigger the handle to return to normal and the lubricated parts of the spray valve cylinder will spray cleaning solution again.

Once everything works like they should, you can triumphantly proceed to reassemble the Bona spray mop. Slide the bottom half of the handle back into the main unit until it clicks into place.

Slide the bottom part of the handle through the bottom of the cover. Make sure the cover lines up perfectly with the spray valve cylinder. Take the two screws and screw them back into place. Next, attach the mop base to the bottom part of the handle. Take the last screw and secure it into place.

Once everything is back to its place, you can continue assembling your Bona Premium Spray Mop like normal. Just in case you forget how to do it, here’s a simple guide to help you.

Conclusion

Now you know why your Bona spray mop is not spraying. Either the liquid container is not installed properly or the spray valve cylinder has accumulated too much gunk. Try reinstalling the container first.

If your spray mop is over 5 years old, you're out of the warranty period so they won't send you a free replacement. You can take it apart and lubricate the spray valve cylinder. Hope this helps somebody.
