How to Empty and Clean Bissell Big Green Machine

Every once in a while, it is important to clean your Bissell Big Green machine. This includes emptying the dirt water tank, cleaning the hose and tools, maintaining the brush roll and belt, and replacing the brush roll. Here you will learn how to clean and maintain the Bissell Big Green machine.

How to Clean, Maintain, and Store Bissell Big Green

Cleaning and maintaining the Bissell Big Green machine involves doing 5 things: emptying the dirty water tank, cleaning the hose and tools, maintaining the brush roll and belt, removing and replacing the brush roll, and storing the machine properly. Here’s how to do each procedure:

1. Emptying the dirty water tank

Remove the dirty water tank by pulling the handle to the upright position and lift it up. Carry the tank like a bucket to a utility sink or outside where you will dispose of the dirty water.

Unlatch the top of the tank from the bottom by pushing the handle all the way forward and lifting the top off. Pour the dirty water into the sink. Rinse both parts of the dirty water tank with warm tap water. The top half of the dirty water tank can also be rinsed clean through the nozzle area.

2. Cleaning the hose and tools

To reduce the risk of electric shock, turn the power switch OFF and disconnect the plug from the electrical outlet before performing any maintenance or troubleshooting checks.

To clean the attachments, remove them from hose and rinse them in clean, running water and let them dry. Clean the hose by removing it from the machine and running tap water through both ends.

3. Maintaining the brush roll and belt

Turn OFF the machine and unplug it from the outlet. Remove the dirty and clean water tanks from the base of the machine. While standing behind the machine, lay it on its side.

Looking at the bottom of the machine, find the back center of the brush carriage where the carriage latch is located. It is between the brush assembly and the front wheels.

Pull the brush carriage towards you with one hand until it stops, then pinch the carriage latch with the other hand while pulling the carriage towards you. The carriage should swing out to show you the belt cover.

Remove the three screws from the cover. Lift and remove the cover to access the brush carriage. Turn the belt inward towards the large pulley while lifting it out. Place the new belt over the small pulley first and then slip the belt over the large pulley. Replace the brush carriage and screws.

Lastly, push the brush carriage back into place making sure the carriage latch locks back into place. Congratulations, you have successfully maintained the brush roll and the belt.

4. Removing and replacing the brush roll

Remove the three screws from the endcap. Pull the end cap off to release the brush roll. With the cover removed, the brush comes out easily by tilting the loose end out of the carriage.

To replace the Bissell Big Green machine’s brush roll back into the machine, place the large open end of the brush onto the carriage and tilt the opposite end back into place.

With the brush sitting relatively straight up and down by itself, place the end cap back on top and replace the three screws. The brush will need to be held and centered to the cover while placing it back on.

Spin the brush by hand to make sure it turns freely with some minor resistance from the motor. Push the brush carriage back into place with a light pull against the lock.

5. Storing your machine

Storing the machine is straightforward. Once your cleaning is complete, make sure both the dirty and clean water tanks are emptied, rinsed out and dried before the next use. Store the machine in a protected, dry area.
