Dyson vacuums run on lithium-ion batteries. Over time, the battery will degrade and need replacement. Older Dyson vacuums require screw-on batteries, while newer Dyson vacuums require snap-in batteries.

Typically, you would want to replace the battery if you have an old Dyson model (Dyson V10 and older). Whether you want to know when to replace the battery or how long the battery lasts, you will learn everything you need to know about a Dyson battery replacement in this article. Let’s get started.

When to replace the Dyson battery?

Replace the Dyson battery when the run time has declined significantly, or when the device is no longer able to hold a charge. Lithium-ion batteries are built to last, but they will degrade over time.

How long do Dyson batteries last before replacement?

A Dyson cordless vacuum battery usually lasts between 3 to 5 years before needing a replacement. However, how you use the device can determine how long the battery lasts. Using the Dyson in extreme heat environments or using high power mode often, for example, can decrease the battery lifespan faster.

How to replace Dyson battery

Replacing the Dyson battery is a piece of cake. But before you buy a Dyson battery replacement, figure out which battery type you need. Some require a snap-in battery, some require a screw-on battery.

1. Decide whether the battery is snap-in or screw-on

Before buying a Dyson battery replacement, it’s important to check what type of battery you need. There are two types of Dyson batteries (snap-in and screw-on). A telltale sign you need a snap-in battery is when you see a big red button on the bottom of the battery. Here’s the type of battery based on the model:

  • Dyson V6 - screw-on battery
  • Dyson V7 - screw-on battery
  • Dyson V8 - screw-on battery
  • Dyson V10 - screw-on battery
  • Dyson V11 - screw-on and snap-in battery
  • Dyson V12 - snap-in battery
  • Dyson V15 - snap-in battery

Please take note that Dyson V11 vacuums use two types of batteries. Some use a screw-on battery while some use a snap-in battery. If there is a large red button then it is a snap-in battery.

2. Buy the replacement battery

Once you know what type of Dyson battery replacement you need, you can simply buy a new one. You can browse a new battery replacement on Amazon based on your particular Dyson model.

3. Replace the Dyson battery

Once you have the Dyson battery replacement ready, you are ready to switch the old one with the new one. Before replacing the battery, always ensure the Dyson is unplugged from the charger. You should also remove the dust container and attachment to make it easier to replace the battery.

To replace the battery on a Dyson V6, unscrew the two screws (one in the rear of the handle and one in the underside of the battery) with a Phillips screwdriver. Place the new battery into the handle, ensuring it snaps into place. Screw the two screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

To replace the battery on a Dyson V7 or V8, unscrew the three screws (one in the rear of the handle and two in the underside of the battery) with a Phillips screwdriver. Place the new battery into the handle, ensuring it snaps into place. Screw the three screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

To replace the battery on a Dyson V10 or V11, unscrew the three screws (one in the rear of the handle and two in the underside of the battery) with a Pozidriv screwdriver. Place the new battery into the handle, ensuring it snaps into place. Screw the three screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

To replace a Dyson snap-in battery, simply press the red button on the battery and pull the battery away from the handle. Place the new battery into the handle until it snaps securely into place.

Every new Dyson battery replacement will only be partially charged. Please fully charge the new battery before using your Dyson vacuum. Each screw-on battery replacement will come with included screws.

How to make Dyson battery last longer

Like any other lithium-ion batteries, Dyson batteries degrade over time. Batteries contain complex chemical structures, but making them last longer is simple to do. Here are some helpful tips:

1. Don’t use your Dyson in extreme hot and cold temperatures

Avoid using your Dyson in hot rooms with prolonged direct sunlight or cleaning the car in hot weather. You should also avoid extremely cold temperatures. Don’t use your Dyson in cold areas in the winter.

Extremely cold and hot environments speed up battery aging. According to Science Direct, both low temperature and high temperature that are outside of this region will lead to degradation of performance and irreversible damages of lithium-ion batteries.

The good news is, Dyson made a safety mechanism that stops the device from operating or charging if the room temperature is below 37°F. This is designed to protect both the motor and battery.

To preserve the life of your Dyson battery, let the machine cool down after use before connecting it back up to the dock to recharge. On the other hand, if the machine is too cold, move it to a warmer room.

2. Store your Dyson in room temperature

Dyson recommends that you store your vacuum at temperatures between 18°C–28°C, away from direct sunlight and out of utility closets. Heat sources, such as radiators, can damage the battery.

3. Give the battery a break

One of the most genius hacks you can do to prolong a Dyson battery is to have two so you can swap them from time to time. By letting a battery run down to empty at least once a month, it will have time to naturally discharge and prolong its life. This is why it’s a good idea to switch the battery once a month.

4. Use Auto or Normal mode

Most Dyson vacuums have a Max or Boost modes that are designed for powerful spot cleaning. The thing is, this mode degrades the battery quicker. To prolong the battery life, use Auto or Normal mode for everyday cleaning. If your machine has Eco mode, run time is maximized for a longer clean.
