Bissell Big Green Machine Troubleshooting
Whether your Bissell Big Green machine is experiencing no suction or no spray, you can always troubleshoot the issue. Below are 7 Bissell Big Green machine problems and their solutions:
1. Bissell Big Green has no suction
The first thing you need to do is to turn off and unplug the machine. Then remove the dirty water tank. Rinse the dirty water tank lid. Make sure the red float and baffle freely move side to side.
Empty the dirty water tank then rinse the dirty water tank over a sink. Don’t forget to rinse the opening in the front of the dirty water tank. Plug the Bissell Big Green machine and turn it ON with the dirty water tank still removed. Test for suction at the red filter. If there is no suction, contact customer care.
Next, remove the clean water tank from the machine. Clear any debris blocking the opening in front of the clean water tank. Once cleared of debris, reattach both the dirty water tank and clean water tank. Turn the Bissell Big Green machine on and check for suction.
No suction to hose
Alternatively, there may be no suction to the hose. The first thing you need to do is to turn off, unplug the machine, and open the attachment hose door. Turn the machine on and check for suction over the opening. Do this by hovering your hand over the opening. If there is no suction, contact Bissell’s customer care.
If there is suction over the opening, check for damage around the gaskets. Please inspect around the gaskets thoroughly. If the gaskets are torn or missing, a replacement hose is needed.

If there is no damage around the gaskets, attach the hose to the attachment hose door. Remove the tool from the end of the hose. Turn the machine on and test for suction by placing your hand at the end of the hose. If there is no suction at the end of the hose, a replacement hose is needed.
2. Bissell Big Green has no spray
The first thing you need to do is to turn off and unplug the machine.
If the Bissell Big Green machine is not spraying, there may be debris causing a clog below the clean water tank. Remove both the clean and dirty water tanks. Make sure there is no debris clogging the inlet below the clean water tank. Wipe the inlet with a clean dry cloth or towel.
Next, check the clean tank for the red gasket. The red gasket should be on the bottom of the clean water tank. If it is missing, look for it in the base of the machine. If you find it, reattach it by pushing the rounded portion of the gasket over the lip on the cap and insert. If it’s gone, you should order a new red gasket.

Once the red gasket is installed properly, fill the clean water tank. Add two capfuls of Bissell Formula. With the clean water tank over a sink, press on the X valve on the bottom of the tank to test if water will come through. If no water comes out of the valve, you need to order a new clean water tank cap.
Lay the Bissell Big Green machine on its side and pull out the brush carriage. Clean the spray tip thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth. Reattach both tanks. Turn the machine on and check for the spray. If there is still no spray from the foot, you will need to contact Bissell’s customer care.
No spray from the hose
Alternatively, there may be no spray coming from the hose. If this is the case, first turn off and unplug the Bissell Big Green machine. Check the hose for cracks and damage by running your hands along the hose. If the hose is cracked or damaged, you will need to buy a new replacement hose.
If the hose is not cracked or damaged, soak the end of the small solution hose in hot tap water. Then, securely attach the hose, including the small solution hose, at the attachment hose door of the machine.
Turn the Bissell Big Green machine on and press the trigger to start cleaning. If there is still no spray from the hose, you will need to contact Bissell’s customer care. They should be able to help you.
3. Bissell Big Green is leaking
First and foremost, if the Bissell Big Green machine is spraying or leaking out of the flow indicator, you should contact Bissell’s customer service. If not, turn off and unplug the machine.
Press the spray trigger and release several times. If the spray trigger does not spring back when pressed, it is damaged. There is nothing you can do other than contacting Bissell’s customer service.
If the spray trigger is working fine, remove the dirty water tank from the machine. Inspect it for damage. Next, remove the clean water tank from the machine and inspect it for damage. If either tanks are cracked or damaged, you will need to buy a replacement immediately.
4. Bissell Big Green brush will not turn
Remember, the Bissell Big Green machine brushes will turn only when the handle is reclined. If the brush will not turn when the handle is reclined, turn off the machine and unplug it from the outlet.
Remove both the dirty water tank and clean water tank. Put the Bissell Big Green machine on its side (cord side up). Pinch the latch and pull the brush carriage out. Remove any debris or blockages in the brush roll.
If the problem persists, check the belt and replace it if needed.

5. Bissell Big Green keeps spraying
If your Bissell Big Green machine keeps spraying, check the trigger.
Press the trigger on the handle several times to get it to spring back. Check for continuous spray again. The flow indicator may spin when not pulling the trigger due to airflow. Press the trigger down and hold it down for at least 30 seconds. Then press and unpress the trigger several times.
6. Bissell Big Green has no power
If the Bissell Big Green machine has no power or won’t turn on, check the entire power cord and plug for any damage. If there is any damage, please contact Bissell’s customer service immediately.
If there is no damage to the cord or plug, please try plugging the cord into multiple working outlets. Check your home’s circuit breaker to see if it tripped. Unplug the unit and wait 20-30 minutes. Plug the Bissell Big Green machine back in and start the machine again If there is still no power, contact Bissell.
7. Bissell Big Green dirty water tank lid is not clear
If the Bissell Big Green dirty water tank lid is not clear, there’s nothing to worry about. According to Bissell, starting in 2016 the dirty tank lid for the Bissell Big Green machine was changed from a clear plastic to a milky white plastic. Some boxes may still show the existing clear lid.
This was done to greatly strengthen the lid to resist from cracking or breaking. The front piece is semi-transparent to be able to see dirt and water being suctioned up. There is no need to worry.
